Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Launches ₹100 Diwali Vegetable Kit Across 218 Centres
Tamil Nadu CM Thalapathy Vijay has launched a ₹100 Diwali vegetable kit containing 10 essential items. Available at 218 cooperative centres from November 5 to 7, the scheme aims to ease the burden of rising festive food prices.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay has introduced a special ₹100 vegetable package for Diwali, offering 10 essential vegetables and cooking ingredients at an affordable price to provide relief to families facing rising food prices during the festive season.
Named the 'Vettri Special Vegetable Package', the initiative is being implemented through the state's Cooperation Department. The package will be available from November 5 to November 7 at 218 selected cooperative centres across Tamil Nadu.
The scheme was formally launched in Chennai at the 15th Main Road outlet of the Poonga Nagar Cooperative Wholesale Store. Four mobile vegetable vehicles have also been deployed across the city to ensure that the packages reach more customers.
Each package contains approximately 2.55 to 2.60 kg of vegetables and other essential cooking ingredients, selected to meet the everyday requirements of an average household.
The ₹100 kit includes 500 grams each of onions and tomatoes, 250 grams each of brinjal and potatoes, 200 grams each of carrots and beans, 100 grams each of green chillies and lemons, 50 grams of ginger, and one coconut weighing between 400 and 450 grams.
Government's Objective Behind the Scheme
Officials said the vegetables are being procured, sorted, weighed and packed in hygienic conditions to maintain freshness and quality. The Cooperation Department aims to make essential vegetables available at prices lower than those prevailing in the open market.
To ensure fair distribution and prevent excessive purchases, the government has restricted sales to one package per person.
Vegetable Kits to Be Available for Three Days
The special vegetable kits will remain available for three days during the regular working hours of participating cooperative centres. Adequate stocks have been arranged at the selected outlets to meet demand.
District-level cooperative coordinators and regional officers have been instructed to monitor distribution and ensure uninterrupted supplies throughout the programme.
The department has also directed officials to maintain proper coordination between procurement centres and retail outlets to prevent any shortage of vegetables during the festive shopping period.
Through the three-day initiative, the Tamil Nadu government aims to make essential kitchen supplies available at affordable prices, offering households an alternative to purchasing vegetables at higher open-market rates during Diwali.
